Gels, creams and sprays containing painkillers such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, ketoprofen, and piroxicam are safe and effective treatments for local pain, according to Cochrane Researchers. A new systematic review they have conducted shows that topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are more effective than placebos for treating short-term pain and have few side effects.

DURHAM, N.C., June 9 — CoLucid Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (”CoLucid”), an innovative biotechnology company focusing on therapies for central nervous system disorders, today announced that its investigational first-in-class Neurally Acting Anti-Migraine Agent (NAAMA), lasmiditan (also known as COL-144), a selective 5-HT1F receptor agonist, was effective when given orally to treat acute migraine attacks, as documented in a Phase IIb study. Results of this study will allow the selection of doses for pivotal Phase III studies of lasmiditan in the acute treatment of migraine, scheduled to begin in fourth quarter this year.

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Chronic pain severely limits patients’ quality of life and is among the cost drivers in U.S. health care. Patients can suffer pain without an apparent cause and often fail to respond to available treatments. Mayo Clinic researchers and collaborators now report that chronic pain may be caused by the inadvertent reprogramming of more than 2,000 genes in the peripheral nervous system. The research findings appear in the current issue of the journal Genome Research.
