According to new study published in Pain

Philadelphia, PA, October 14, 2010 – Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating condition affecting 11󈝻 million individuals in the US alone. FM carries an annual direct cost for care of more than $20 billion and drug therapies are generally only 30% effective in relieving symptoms and 20% effective in improving function. Standard care currently includes medications accompanied by exercise and coping skills approaches. In a study published in the November issue of PAIN, researchers report patients participating in a “Yoga of Awareness” program showed significantly greater improvement in FM symptoms and functioning compared to patients on a standard FM care program.

Interaction of multiple brain networks provides insight into how pain occurs

A recent study from researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Michigan provides the first direct evidence of linkage between elevated intrinsic (resting-state) brain connectivity and spontaneous pain intensity in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). This research shows an interaction of multiple brain networks, offering greater understanding of how pain arises. Details of the study appear online and in the August issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology.

Researchers investigating UK samples have found no association between the controversial xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus (XMRV) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Their study, published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Retrovirology, calls into question a potential link described late last year by an American research team.

New UK research, published today in PLoS ONE, has not reproduced previous findings that suggested Chronic Fatigue Syndrome may be linked to a recently discovered virus. The authors of the study, from Imperial College London and King’s College London, say this means that anti-retroviral drugs may not be an effective treatment for people with the illness.

BreakThrough: Virus Linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

October 9, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Scientists say they may have found the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome. It is a condition that has baffled doctors for decades some even suggesting the symptoms were psychological. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition of prolonged and severe tiredness, body aches and other symptoms and affects 17 million people worldwide. CFS is a multi-systemic disease only previously diagnosed by a set of criteria, requiring that the symptoms must not be caused by other medical conditions, with severe mental and physical exhaustion, which is “unrelieved by rest”, is worsened by exertion and is present for at least six months.
