Funded by a $2.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, a team of UGA Cancer Center researchers is studying the fluid secreted by the pancreas to determine whether subtle changes in proteins and the sugars that adorn the proteins, known as glycans, can herald the presence of cancerous or precancerous cells. The UGA effort is part of a $15.5 million, five-year NIH initiative to discover, develop and clinically validate new early diagnostic tests for cancer by studying glycans. Read more

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Researchers reported on Wednesday they could detect even early stage pancreatic cancer by shining light on a neighboring organ.
The findings may lead to the first method to detect this particularly deadly form of cancer early enough to treat it, said study researcher Vadim Backman of Northwestern University. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of U.S. cancer deaths.
Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer by Stage

It is hard to stage pancreatic cancer accurately by imaging tests. Doctors must do their best to decide before surgery whether there is a good chance the cancer can be completely removed. Surgeons usually consider a pancreatic cancer resectable (completely removable by surgery) if it is staged as T1, T2, or T3. That means it doesn’t extend far beyond the pancreas, especially into nearby large blood vessels (T4). There is no accurate way to assess the lymph node spread of the tumor before or at the time of surgery.
